Can I serve in the Army Reserve or Army National Guard and also be in ROTC?

Yes, there is a program called the Simultaneous Membership Program or SMP. This is a volunteer officer training program which allows individuals to simultaneously participate in a U.S. Army National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve unit and ROTC advanced courses.

Participants are entitled to Reserve Component (RC) pay of E-5. They also receive the monthly ROTC stipend of $250 for being contracted. Some cadets may even qualify for Reserve GI Bill payments and state specific benefits. Valuable experience is gained through the SMP program and it allows for practical hands on learning.

MSI and MSII cadets who enlist in the RC prior to contracting as an MSIII, must attend the Individual Active Duty for Training (IADT). All active duty personnel and Army ROTC scholarship winners (4, 3, or 2 year scholarships) are prohibited from participation in the SMP. Most Reserve and Guard units are happy to have cadets in their units because they do not count against the officer strength of the unit.
